Panthers' Cook wins two events at sectional

Hunter Cook won two titles and Cory McLaughlin won another to lead the Hilliard Darby High School boys swimming and diving team in the Division I sectional meet Feb. 9 at Union County YMCA in Marysville.

Cook won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 2.28 seconds and won the 500 freestyle in 4:47.03. He is seeded second in both events for the district meet Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio State.

The winner of each swimming event at sectional qualified for the district. In addition, 27 at-large district berths were awarded in each swimming event based on times from the Central, East and Southeast sectional sites. Divers do not compete until district.

At district, the top two placers in each swimming event automatically advance to the state meet Feb. 21-23 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide. The top three boys divers and top four girls divers advance to state.

McLaughlin won the 100 backstroke in 55.72 and is seeded fourth at district. The 200 medley relay (1:43.31) also won and is seeded fourth.

Darby scored 183 points at sectional to finish third of 10 teams, behind Dublin Coffman (230) and Dublin Jerome (218) and ahead of Olentangy Liberty (160), Dublin Scioto (157), Olentangy (141), Olentangy Orange (72), Marysville (43), Davidson (40) and Bradley (24).

McLaughlin also qualified for district in the 200 IM. Blake Dickmann (200 free, 100 back) and Tyler Long (500 free, 100 butterfly) both advanced in two individual events. Also advancing for the Panthers were Ross McDonald (50 free), Zack Gbur (100 back) and Griffin Jones (100 breaststroke) and the 200 and 400 free relays.

For Davidson, Alex Waldron qualified for district in the 100 back and 200 IM and is seeded 11th and 26th, respectively, in the events.

All three of the Wildcats' relays also advanced.

Jon Satre was Bradley's lone district qualifier. He is seeded fifth in the 100 back and 10th in the 200 free.

Wildcats, Panthers fare well at sectional

The Davidson girls team qualified for district in five individual events and all three relays and Darby advanced in four individual events and all three relays.

The Wildcats finished sixth (93) of 10 teams in the sectional Feb. 9 at Union County YMCA, behind Liberty (248), Jerome (218), Olentangy (212), Coffman (193) and Scioto (110) and ahead of Darby (89), Orange (75), Marysville (30) and Hilliard Bradley (0).

The only top-three finish for the three Hilliard girls teams was supplied by Darby's Mackenzie Caruthers, who was runner-up in the 500 free (5:21.9). She is seeded sixth at district in the event and also advanced in the 200 free.

Also qualifying for district for Darby were Olivia Wile (100 back, 100 fly) and Maddie McDonald (100 fly).

Davidson's Megan Schmalenberger advanced in the 100 free and is seeded 12th in the event. She also qualified in the 100 fly.

Also advancing for the Wildcats were Megan Wittman (200 free, 500 free), Felicia Fantin (100 breast) and Jessie Lewis (100 fly).

Bradley did not have any district qualifiers.
