The Hilliard Bradley and Davidson high school boys volleyball teams won their opening matches in the Division I East Region tournament and faced each other in a regional semifinal May 15.
The winner faces Gahanna or Pickerington North in a regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Davidson. The regional champion advances to a state quarterfinal May 25 at Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit.
Davidson defeated St. Charles 25-11, 25-15, 25-19 in the first round May 11 to improve to 13-10 overall. That same day, Bradley beat Westerville North 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 in the first round to improve to 9-6 overall.
Davidson defeated Gahanna 25-23, 25-23 on April 12 but has not played Pickerington North this season. Bradley did not play either team during the regular season.
On May 11, Gahanna improved to 16-9 with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 win over Upper Arlington in its tournament opener and Pickerington North defeated Westerville South 25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 25-19 in the first round to improve to 15-10.
Bradley and Davidson split a pair of OCC-Ohio Division matches during the regular season, with the Jaguars winning 22-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, 19-17 on April 9 and the Wildcats winning 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 on April 25. The teams both finished 7-3 in the OCC-Ohio to tie for second, behind Darby (10-0).
Bradley and Davidson also met in a regional semifinal last season, with the Jaguars winning 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 15-13. The Jaguars went on to advance to the state tournament for the first time before losing to eventual champion Cincinnati Moeller 25-11, 25-15, 25-17 in a quarterfinal.
Darby played Central in tourney opener
Top-seeded Darby had a first-round bye in the Division I East Region tournament and played Pickerington Central in a regional semifinal May 15.
The winner plays Dublin Coffman or Olentangy Liberty in a regional final at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Davidson. The regional champion advances to a state quarterfinal May 25 at Walsh Jesuit.
Darby, which was 19-2 overall before facing Central, is seeking its fourth consecutive trip to state.
Last season, the Panthers reached the state final, where they lost to top-ranked Moeller 25-20, 25-10, 25-17.
Coffman was 9-14 after rallying to beat Westerville Central 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-6, 15-13 in the first round May 11. That same day, Liberty defeated Thomas Worthington 25-22, 18-25, 25-4, 25-15 in its tournament opener to improve to 8-9.
Darby swept Coffman in OCC-Ohio play, winning 25-7, 25-13, 25-15 on April 4 and 25-13, 25-9, 26-24 on April 23, but has not played Liberty this season.
