With a lineup that includes two players consistently scoring in the low 90s or better, Hilliard Davidson High School girls golf coach Robert Winland has been pleased with his team’s performance through its first month.
On Aug. 14, the Wildcats placed fourth (407) in the 10-team North Union Invitational at Mill Creek behind champion Watterson (341).
In the third round of the OCC-Ohio Division tournament Aug. 27 at The Links at Groveport, Davidson took third (384) behind Pickerington North (339) and Thomas Worthington (377). Gahanna also shot 384, but the Wildcats won the tiebreaker on fifth-player score.
“The girls varsity golf team is off to its best start ever,” Winland said. “We also have one of the largest groups of girls playing in central Ohio with 19 players.”
Davidson is tied with Canal Winchester for fourth (11-10) in the OCC-Ohio entering the final round of the league tournament Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Mentel Memorial, behind Pickerington North (21-0), Thomas (17-4) and Upper Arlington (12-9) and ahead of Gahanna (9-12), Lancaster (2-19) and Darby (1-20).
Senior Katie Lease is sixth in the league with an 85 average. She is followed by sophomore Annie Stimmel (90.3), junior Sydney Weadock (107.3), senior Megan Ries (109.3) and sophomore Josie Brown (109.7).
After placing sixth in the opening round of the league tournament, Davidson was fifth (381) in the second round Aug. 13 at Oakhaven behind champion North (345).
“Leading the ladies is Katie Lease,” Winland said. “Her average is 42 for nine holes and she is a great leader for the young golfers. Annie Stimmel has also medaled for us and is playing solid golf, as she averages a 44 for nine holes. Megan Ries, Sydney Weadock and Josie Brown are bringing in nice scores as they compete in the top five.”
Darby showing improvement
Darby earned its first league victory when it shot 446 to place seventh Aug. 27 in the third round of the OCC-Ohio tournament. Lancaster was eighth (469).
Freshman Hailey Scott led the Panthers with a 102, followed by sophomore Lydia McDaniels (109), senior Spencer Martin (116) and sophomore Anna Burkhart (119).
“So far the season is going as expected,” coach Jeff Pontius said. “The girls are showing improvement as the season progresses. Every girl has been able to contribute in some way this year.”
Through three rounds of the league tournament, Scott has averaged 99.5 and McDaniels has averaged 100. Burkhart shot 131 during the first round of the league tournament Aug. 7 at Westchester, but improved to 123 in the second round Aug. 13 at Oakhaven and 119 during the third round.
“So far this season, our biggest individual highlight is the improvement by Anna Burkhart,” Pontius said.
