Senior expected to lead Wildcats

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The Hilliard Davidson High School girls swimming and diving team has returned five Division I district qualifiers from last season.

Leading that list of athletes is senior Megan Schmalenberger, who placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in a program-record 53.3 seconds and 10th in the 100 butterfly (59.2). She missed earning a state berth by .02 of a second in the 100 free.

"Megan Schmalenberger is the only senior on Davidson's roster and was its top scorer at the district meet last season," said coach Brian Dickmann, who oversees the Bradley, Darby and Davidson programs. "She also was a member of two (district-qualifying) relays. We expect a big season from her."

The other returning district qualifiers are junior Felicia Fantin and sophomores Lauren Erdman, Jessie Lewis and Alexis Zody.

Last year at district, Fantin placed 25th in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.49), Lewis finished 22nd in the 100 fly (1:01.96) and Erdman and Zody competed in relays. The 400 free relay placed 14th (3:51.73) and the 200 medley relay (1:56.97) and 200 free relay (1:48.6) finished 15th and 18th, respectively.

The Wildcats have five other returning letterwinners in junior Danielle Eastham and sophomores Emily Byrd, Emma Gavlik, Lauren Rosier and Lauren Weber.

Completing the roster are junior Rachel Serafy, sophomores Marleah Heyman and Rachel McConnell and freshmen Livy Boysel, Kayla Daberkow, Hannah Gavlik, Caroline Hess and Maya Walters.

Walters is the team's only diver.

"Rachel Serafy is a strong newcomer who should provide added points," Dickmann said. "Davidson should be strong in freestyle and butterfly events, but overall the team lacks depth.

"Still, the goal is to have success in dual meets, qualify more individuals to district than last season, get someone to state and to have fun swimming fast."

Davidson did not have any state qualifiers last season.

Panthers return six district qualifiers

Darby has returned six district qualifiers from last season, including sophomores Mackenzie Caruthers and Olivia Wile.

Caruthers placed 12th in the 200 free (program-record 1:59.16) and was sixth in the 500 free (5:20.05), and Wile finished 16th in the 100 fly (program-record 1:00.64) and 21st in the 100 backstroke (1:04.06).

The other returning district qualifiers are senior Claire Craddick, juniors Denise Dye and Maddie McDonald and sophomore Claire Bergefurd.

McDonald finished 29th in the 100 fly (1:04.94) and all six of the returning district qualifiers competed in at least one of the Panthers' three relays. The 400 free relay finished 15th (3:54.33) and the 200 medley relay (1:57.45) and 200 free relay (1:50.27) finished 16th and 20th, respectively.

"Darby returns all of its district scorers and has a solid core, which lacks depth overall," Dickmann said. "Mackenzie Caruthers ... was the top-scoring freshman in the 200 free (last season). She also won an OCC-Cardinal (Division) title in the 500 free and was a member of the medley and 400 freestyle relays.

"Olivia Wile and Maddie McDonald also had good seasons. I have high expectations for all of the district qualifiers to improve on last season."

Also on the team are junior Destiny Camp, sophomores Alyse Corty, Kathryn Cover and Mackenzie Mobley and freshmen Angelina Marchio and Tia McLaughlin.

Three letterwinners return for Jaguars

Bradley has only eight athletes this season, including three letterwinners in seniors Delaney Banda, Kyra Sommer and Rebecca Woodson.

Banda and Woodson were district qualifiers as fresh-men, but both missed all of last season because of injury. The Jaguars did not have any district qualifiers last season.

Rounding out the roster are juniors Kaemmer Henderson and Hannah Zeis and freshmen Brynn Driscoll, Lizzie Hofinger and Abigail Shouse.

"Our seniors coming off injuries, so I'm not sure what to expect," Dickmann said. "Brynn Driscoll has the ability to do very well. She has been a consistent competitor throughout the state in the USA program and has won several events at her age group level in the Great Lakes YMCA Zone meet that encompasses 97 YMCAs from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. It remains to be seen how well she will do in her high school career, but we remain optimistic."
