Northridge school officials announced principal assignments Monday for both the consolidated Northridge Elementary (K-3) and Northridge Intermediate (4-5) schools next year.

Northridge school officials announced principal assignments Monday for both the consolidated Northridge Elementary (K-3) and Northridge Intermediate (4-5) schools next year.

Current Alexandria Elementary principal Andra Kisner will head the staff at the elementary, while Hartford principal Kasey Cottrill will be principal at the intermediate school.

In related business Monday, the school board voted to accept the resignation of Homer Elementary principal Penelope Ziegler, effective April 18.

"We extend our best wishes for her retirement," Northridge Superintendent John Shepard said later. "We want to express our gratitude for her 35 years of service to Northridge, both as a classroom teacher and, for the last eight years, as a principal."

Shepard said the remaining administrators will serve as principal at Homer on a rotating basis until the end of the school year.

The board's April business meeting was held in the gymnasium of Alexandria Elementary -- part of a series of on-site meetings and public forums being conducted at buildings throughout the district.

In the fall, the Alexandria building will house all district K-3 students because both the Hartford and Homer buildings will close at the end of this school year.

Dozens of district residents turned out for that regular meeting, although the majority were not there to discuss the closing of the elementary buildings and realignment of grade levels. Instead, many spoke out in support of varsity boys basketball coach Brent Cahill.

As is routine each spring, the board voted to not renew all supplemental coaching contracts. Shepard said new contracts for those positions are not drawn up in April because April is dedicated to renewing teaching and classified staff contracts.

The board did renew teaching contracts for varying lengths of time during Monday's meeting.

The 2008 list of graduating seniors was also approved. Commencement ceremonies will be held at 2 p.m. June 1.

Northridge treasurer Felicia Drummey reported that the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) made two official recommendations as part of a financial analysis it recently conducted of the district. That analysis was done as a result of projected low fund balances in coming years.

The ODE advised the district to avoid cash flow problems by maintaining a cash balance at the end of each fiscal year big enough to meet essential expenditures for at least one month and to stop the deficit spending that marked the past three fiscal years, which Drummey pointed out it already began to do last fall. "This is not anything new to the board," she said.

Hartford area parent volunteer Rebecca McPheters was awarded the monthly Golden Viking Award for her work organizing and coaching the Battle of the Books event for elementary students since the program began.

Battle of the Books is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the high school auditeria.

The board has scheduled a special meeting April 30 to select a vendor for the modular intermediate unit.

Next month's regular board meeting will be held May 19 at Homer Elementary beginning at 6 p.m. It will include a public forum and tour.
