The Johnstown Historical Society will present "Broadway Best," featuring more than 20 top songs from Broadway shows, beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at the Opera House.

The concert is the seventh in a series.

Organizer Terry Priest said the concert is a "stay vacation" opportunity for local residents who want to get out of the house and don't want to drive.

"You don't have to go too far away," he said. "It's free refreshments and parking. It's bound to be a fun, fun, fun evening and a cheap date."

Selections include songs from recent Tony award winners "South Pacific" and "Gypsy," Gershwin standards from "Porgy and Bess" and "Oh Kay," recent hits from "Hairspray," "Wicked" and "Movin' Out." There will also be favorites from "Phantom of the Opera," "Les Miserables," "Sound of Music" and "Oklahoma."

Performers include veteran Johnstown High School graduates Daina Lilly Smith, Tonya Brown Define, Kirk Friedberg, Bruce Piper, Christy Rector Bailey, Melody Rings, Rocco Contini and Madison Stephens. Also performing will be Claire Almendinger, Mac Arnold, Christopher Bailey, Carolyn Cochran, Vicki Gierhart, Val Greer, Linda Meyer, Steve Orr, Austin Piper and several surprises.

Songs will include "For Good" from "Wicked," "Think of Me" from "Phantom," "Without Love" and "Ladies Choice" from "Hairspray" and "Kansas City" from "Oklahoma," among others.

As of Thursday, Priest had 26 songs to be performed.

"It's going to be a full concert," he said. "Come and enjoy a nice concert evening."

The Historical Society has also sponsored concerts including the Brits Hits '60s, an Elvis show, Legends Concert, Motown, country-western and a gospel concert.

The Broadway Best concert will be offered in the air-conditioned Opera House on the Square in Johnstown, beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Tickets will be available at the door. Groups of 10 or more should call 740-967-8721.

All proceeds help benefit the ongoing projects of the Johnstown Historical Society.
