A Baker's Acres' event dubbed "Blooming for Alexandria" raised a total of $1,293 for six Alexandria organizations on Aug. 23.

The day-long fundraiser and end-of-season sale featured not only 20 to 50 percent off perennials and annuals, along with music and kids' activities, but served as an opportunity for customers to designate half of their purchase price to Alexandria Fire Association, Alexandria Garden Club, Alexandria Museum, Alexandria Public Library, Friends of Captain Scott or Parker Community Park.

"We had fun and we have lots less plants we have to water, " said owner Nancy Baker. "We'll plan to do other such days in the future."

Parker Park Chair Naomi Compton said she was thankful for the generosity shown by Baker's Acres' owners Chris and Nancy Baker.

"Nancy approached me at Fun Days with her fundraising idea, and I felt it was a great way to help a lot of deserving organizations," Compton said.

"Nancy's efforts have resulted in much-needed money for our local groups, and I know we all appreciate it."

The group that received the most contributions from the event was Alexandria Garden Club, which garnered $404.83 in donations.

Other organizations that benefited were: Alexandria Fire Association, $254.82; Alexandria Public Library, $246.66; Friends of Captain Scott, $158.01; Alexandria Museum, $141.02; and Parker Community Park, $87.66.
