Johnstown elementary students walked laps Thursday and Friday, generating more than $12,000 for the Johnstown Parent Booster Organization (PBO).

Organizer Suzie Bates said the walk-a-thon served as the PBO's only fall fundraiser. The students sought donations for the walk-a-thon from family, friends and neighbors.

"It wasn't (a donation) per lap, just flat donations," Bates said.

Kindergartners walked for a half-hour at the high school track on Thursday afternoon, while Searfoss students walked at the track on Friday afternoon. Oregon Elementary students walked at the football field next to Oregon on Friday morning.

The walk-a-thon also featured fun for the kids, such as bubble machines, a clown, roaming characters, music and an afternoon performance by the Big Red Band.

Proceeds of the fundraiser will be used for various PBO projects throughout the year, according to Bates. Some of those projects include a student math night, COSI on Wheels at Searfoss and Oregon, Scholastic birthday books for every student on their birthday, classroom supplies and other projects/items that directly benefit the teachers and students.

"One-hundred percent of this money goes right back to the students and teachers at Oregon and Searfoss to be used on various projects like technology upgrades, busing for field trips, PE equipment, smart boards, classroom supplies " Bates said. "We want to thank all the parents and students for their continued support of the PBO."

The students were all given a "Keep Walking" T-shirt that was sponsored by area businesses.

Bates and the other walk-a-thon committee members April Thompson and Kathy Arnold thank the following: Gold Sponsors (donations of $250 or more): Moore Drywall and Paint, Route 62 Car Wash, Tabit, Arganbright & Hazelbaker and State Farm Insurance - Tad Dodderer
