Clearing operations started this week on a highway improvement project involving the widening and resurfacing of a section of U.S. Route 62 in Monroe, Bennington and Liberty townships in Licking County, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. Contract for the project, which starts at the end of the corporation line of Johnstown and extends northeast for 5.6 miles, was awarded recently to Shelly & Sands, Inc., of Thornville, on a bid of $271,890. The project also includes installation of 22 pipe culverts and reduction of a hazardous grade approximately one-half mile east of Township Road 60.

The officers of the Johnstown Corn Kernals Club met Monday evening, Sept. 15, at the school house. It was decided that the contest having the highest yield of corn would be awarded a trophy, with awards being given to the second and third place runners-up. All plots are to be checked and completed by Oct. 15.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, National Kids Day will be celebrated with the Johnstown Girl Scout group selling peanuts early in morning. There will be nearly 400 young people in Newark and Licking County participating in the program by the Kiwanis Club that furnishes peanuts, baskets and hats to the kids at cost.
