Northridge fourth- and fifth-graders recently participated in the eighth annual "Battle of the Books."

Coordinator Mary Jo Layman said the academic competition is between teams to name the title and author of books. Students also answer questions about the novel's plot, setting and characters.

The contest is much like any other quiz bowl, except the questions are only about children's literature, Layman said. The purpose of the program is to motivate students to read.

The students have been reading 100 books since last summer, Layman said, and they have been practicing with their coaches.

The fifth grade participated in its book battle on May 5. Members of the winning team, Neon Orange, were Kaelin Curran, Miguel Disbennett, Kayla Guy, Kendra Garee and Jeb Board. Runner-up Light Purple team members were Jamie Comisford, Josie Bunstine, Anita Schultz and Jamie Swickard.

Members from the other teams were Light Blue: Aili Barbee, Megan Dalton, Travis Lewis, Leyna Varney and Haley Trimble; Hot Pink: Colin Evans, Noah Anderson, Zachary Weaver and Jordan Wolfe.

The fourth-graders had their competition on May 12. The winning team was Viking Green, made up of Brian Pokorny, Joel Hale, Cody Baker and Jonathan Feightner. Members of the runner-up Black Team were Lydia Smith, Aubri McClure, Ashley Ferry and Sandy Hunter.

The other two teams were the Gold with Daniel Hatfield, LA Kelly and Garrett Carr and the Lime with Kaycee Cambell, Whittney Barnes and Ashlee Williams.

Layman moderated the competitions and asked the questions.

Teachers and coaches were Kim Curran, Hayley Curran, Marsha Hurt, Lenn Gomez, Becky Stainbrook, Jill McLaughlin, Janine Mayville, Charles Stearns and Carol Jasper.

Lighting and sound were done by Carrie Baker. Trisha McConnell and Adam Eckstein were the masters of ceremony for the events.
