Northridge High School quarterback Storm Strout is leading the Vikings football team in the offseason as chairman of a fundraising campaign for a memorial to honor the late Jon Warga.

Warga, a 1986 Northridge graduate, holds Vikings records for rushing - game, season and career - and receiving records for season and career. He later played football for Wittenberg University, where he was named the Tigers' offensive player of the year in 1990. He also set a record for single season rushing in 1990, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

Strout said he decided to lead the campaign for new goal posts in Warga's memory because "it's the right thing to do."

"I've been working on the press box and field and I knew of Jon," Strout said. "I knew the situation. My dad played football with Jon."

Warga died unexpectedly in 2001, leaving a wife, a 2-year-old and a baby on the way.

Strout said the football team hopes to raise anywhere from $3,400 to $5,000 in sponsorships this summer for new "Y" shaped goal posts to replace the current "H" posts.

"We're the only ones in the Mid-Buckeye Conference that still has the 'H' posts," Strout said.

The team is selling two-by-four foot banners for business and company sponsorships at $200 each. The banners, featuring dark green and white lettering, will be displayed on the fence around the football field during Vikings home games. In addition to banners, the team will offer space in its football program for $100.

All proceeds will go toward the goal posts project.

Warga's number - 21 - will be displayed on the goal post pad in the north end zone, where a four-by-eight banner will also be hung with his records and the retirement of his number.

"Our first home game against Columbus Academy will dedicated to Jon, and that's when we'll retire his number," Strout said.
