Johnstown women will officially be supporting the men of the American Legion Post 254 with the reactivation of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Karren Jennings, president of the auxiliary, said the main purpose of the group is to support the American Legion Post with any needs it may have.

"It's also to support other organizations," she said. "It's a volunteer organization to help out wherever needed."

One of the organization's largest fundraising projects will be a poppy sale twice a year, on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

"The Poppy Drive supports the Veteran's Home in Sandusky," Jennings said. "It's one of the largest fundraisers. I believe it's done nationwide."

Auxiliary membership is open to women who are the mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and grandmothers of any veteran eligible for American Legion membership.

Ladies are also eligible to join the auxiliary if the veteran is deceased but was or could have been a Legion member.

Bruce Tolle, commander of Johnstown American Legion Post 254, called relatives of post members to see if there was enough interest in reactivating the auxiliary.

"I needed a minimum of 10 to start anything in motion," he said. "I thought we'd try it, and there was enough interest.

"We'll appreciate their help. They may help us find some younger veterans as well. Women tend to be more conversational than men and that could uncover potential members."

The post currently boasts 163 members; however, only about 20 of them are active.

Jennings said the original women's auxiliary disbanded about 10 years ago because of a low membership.

"Even in the legion unit, the organization has a lot of elderly people involved," she said. "We need younger members to keep it going."

The auxiliary was reactivated with 14 joining late last month, when the charter was signed. Another member has since joined.

"We hope to get more information out there to women to increase membership," Jennings said.

Ladies auxiliaries generally have two groups one for women age 18 and over and one for those age 17 and younger. The Johnstown American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary currently includes only members 18 and over.

Membership isn't limited to Johnstown residents and currently involves ladies from Pataskala and Alexandria as well as Johnstown.

In addition to Jennings, other officers are Barb Fleshman, vice president; Sally Conrad, secretary; Sandie Tolle, treasurer; and Lucy Walsh, chaplain.

The Ladies Auxiliary meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion, 44 S. Main St. Anyone interested in joining can call Jennings at 614-204-8785.
