LMHS sponsors 'For Your Health' 5K

Licking Memorial Health System will sponsor a "For Your Health" 5K and Fun Walk Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Dawes Arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Road.

The 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the 1-mile Fun Walk to follow at 8:40 a.m. Awards will be given for the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

Registration may be completed online at www.secondsoleracing.com through July 29. The cost to register online is $15. Race-day registration is $20. All participants will receive Core Performance Wear shirts.

YMCA offers Silver Sneakers program

The Licking County Family YMCA Western Branch, 355 W. Broad St. in Pataskala, is a Silver Sneakers provider.

Silver Sneakers is a fun, energizing program that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events.

Health plans around the country offer Silver Sneakers to people who are eligible for Medicare or to group retirees. Silver Sneakers provides a Licking County Family YMCA membership.

This benefit includes access to conditioning classes and exercise equipment; customized Silver Sneakers classes designed specifically for older adults; health education seminars and other special events; a program adviser to help participants get started; and online support to help participants lose weight, quit smoking and reduce stress.

Housing coalition plans golf outing

The Licking County Coalition for Housing (LCCH) will host its annual golf outing fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 27, at The Links at Echo Springs, 5940 Loudon St. near Johnstown.

The event, a four-person scramble, will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. after registration, which starts at 7:30 a.m. The registration fee of $250 per foursome or $65 per individual includes greens fees, use of a cart, door prizes and prizes for top finishers. A continental breakfast and a picnic lunch will be provided.

Event sponsorships, golf cart sponsorships and hole sponsorships are still available. Door prize donations also are welcome.

Local shoe drive to benefit Soles4Souls

Newark area residents are invited to recycle their "gently worn" shoes in an effort to help distribute shoes to people in need.

The Newark Nazarene Firehouse, 71 Maholm St., will collect shoes for Soles4Souls beginning Aug. 14. Soles4Souls distributes shoes to people living in extreme poverty and to those in areas affected by natural disasters.

Donations may be dropped off before or after Sunday services through Sept. 4.

Licking County Players will present Ken Ludwig's "Postmortem" Aug. 4-14.

The show is described as "mysterious thriller" with classic devices such as "shots in the dark, closely held secrets and misbegotten suspicions." William Gillette, one of upstate New York's finest actors and playwrights, invites cast members for an entertaining weekend at his Connecticut River castle. What he didn't plan on was a murder plot against himself.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Aug. 4-6 and Aug. 11-13. Matinee performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 7 and 14. All performances are in an air-conditioned theater at 131 W. Main St. in downtown Newark.
