Auction of decorated
trees set for Saturday

The Johnstown Historical Society will present an auction of decorated artificial Christmas trees - along with a free concert with music by Bruce Piper - following the Santa Parade Saturday, Dec. 3.

Area residents or groups can raise money for a charity of their choice by providing provide a decorated artificial tree for the auction. Those who would like to do so should call the Johnstown Historical Society at 740-967-4591 or 967-8721 by Dec. 1.

The auction will take place on the Town Square at the Opera House, along with the concert, at about 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, after the CCL Santa Parade.

The event raised more than $1,000 for local charities last year.


Volunteers needed for
VITA program

The Licking County Coalition for Housing is seeking volunteers who are interested in helping local taxpayers prepare and e-file their income tax returns.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the Newark Public Library, 101 W. Main St. Information, dinner and training materials will be provided. RSVP to or (740) 345-1970, ext. 229. Additional training classes will be held in December and January.

The tax preparation site will be open from late-January to mid-April at the LCCH offices in downtown Newark, with additional hours at Opportunity Links on East Main Street and Warner Library on the OSU-Newark campus.

Volunteers are provided with training materials and must pass the IRS certification test. They may attend local training classes, or train and certify online through the IRS website.

A commitment of approximately 10 hours for training and four hours per week during tax season is required.

Santa Pet Portraits
to benefit Angel Paws

Customized, digital pet portraits with Santa will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 27, Dec. 3 and 4 at Wilson's Garden Center, 10923 Lambs Lane.

Proceeds benefit Angel Paws.

Digital photo packages start at $10, and include a free gift bag. Purchase a customized print to take home, or bring a flash drive and take all shots home. Flash drives and hand-decorated photo frames will be available while supplies last.

Pet lovers are also invited to honor their pets through the "Light Up a Paw Print in Heaven Memorial Tree," which will be on display at Wilson's through Dec. 31.

Midland to present
'Gift of the Magi'

The historic Midland Theatre in downtown Newark will present a performance of O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi" at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.

The story is about a young couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money.

Sandi Patty to perform at theatre Dec. 8

Sandi Patty will perform at the Midland Theatre in Newark at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The winner of 39 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards and four Billboard Music Awards headlined her first national tour in 1984. Patty was nationally acclaimed after her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was included in the ABC Statue of Liberty rededication broadcast on July 4, 1986. This led to appearances on The Tonight Show, Christmas in Washington and Walt Disney's Fourth of July Extravaganza.

She sang the national anthem at the Indianapolis 500 in 1987-88 and from 1990-92.
