Chamber's Groundhog Breakfast is Feb. 1

Licking County Chamber of Commerce President Cheri Hottinger said last week a few spots are still available for the chamber's 57th annual Groundhog Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 1.

"It's quite a tradition," Hottinger said. "We have more than 700 people coming."

The Groundhog Breakfast is in Adena Hall on the Ohio State University at Newark campus, 1179 University Drive in Newark.

Doors open at 5:30 a.m., with breakfast at 6 a.m. and the presentation at 6:30 a.m.

This year's event has garnered extra attention, Hottinger said, because two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin is the featured speaker.

"Who wouldn't want to hear him speak?" she said.

Griffin, a star running back for the Ohio State University Buckeyes football team from 1972 to 1975, is the president and CEO of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Hottinger said the Groundhog Breakfast also will include the traditional economic forecast for 2013 provided by several community leaders; the presentation of the John Alford Community Service Award; and, of course, the unveiling of the mystery "celebrity" groundhog, who last year was John Hinderer of John Hinderer Honda. The celebrity groundhog dresses in a costume resembling the iconic rodent until he or she is unmasked during the event.

Hottinger said Groundhog Breakfast attendees will be able to network with the area's most prominent community members and business leaders.

"Everybody comes to the Groundhog Breakfast; it's the place to be," she said. "You can definitely make connections."

Reservations can be made by calling the chamber offices at 740-345-9757. Corporate table seating for eight people is $300, and individual tickets are $30 for chamber members and $35 for all others. No tickets will be available at the door.

"You won't be sorry for getting up early Friday," Hottinger said.
