New Albany's Farmers Market will open June 20

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The New Albany Farmers Market will open for its third season Thursday, June 20.

The market is held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 29, except July 4, in New Albany's Market Square.

The market also went indoors for the winter this past year, from October to February, and several merchants who participated in the indoor market will be on the vendors list this summer, said Kristen Ferguson, spokeswoman for the farmers market.

"We have several new merchants this year," Ferguson said. "We continue to increase the base, adding new faces, along with the returning regulars."

This year's market is expected to feature 50 merchants selling fresh produce, such as peaches, berries and sweet corn, and specialty items, such as bison, honey, jams, salsa, herb-infused oils and vinegars and gourmet baked goods.

Several vendors represent small operations that are "organic or eco-minded" and customers can ask questions about the food they are buying from the person who grows it, Ferguson said.

Five food trucks, including Pitabilities, Mojo Tago and Short North Bagel Deli, are expected to visit the market, and live entertainment is scheduled weekly for the entire season, Ferguson said.

The farmers market also features the "Sweet 16," a group of regular volunteers who help merchants unload, set up and load before leaving, Ferguson said.

"We're a swarm of bees helping them set up and tear down," she said.

Volunteers also provide vendors with water and name badges so they can be identified by community members, she said.

The market will continue to feature a community table that can be staffed by a local organization.

"It's a community-relations table, that the Rotary Club, (the New Albany Women's Network) or the PTOs could use, along with other entities in the community that want to share what they're doing," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said organizers encourage patrons to arrive early for the best selection and to bring bags so they can carry items home.

A list of vendors and entertainment will be posted online at healthynewalbany.org.
