Licking Memorial Health Systems (LMHS) accepted two awards at the 2013 Health Care Heroes Awards, presented in Columbus by Columbus Business First.

LMHS' Active * Fit Youth Wellness Program received the Community Outreach Award, which recognizes an awareness program that educates the general community about vital healthcare issues.

Active * Fit was established in 2012 as a collaboration between LMHS and Newark Advocate Media to address the increasing incidence of childhood obesity in Licking County. Under the program, youth ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to make healthy lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity, healthy food choices and sufficient sleep. Supervised by adults, the participants set goals and track their progress. Free, fun, health-related events help the young people progress. In four months, participants who meet their goals receive prizes that range from Xbox 360 units with fitness software to bicycles, iPods with exercise software, athletic shoes and gift cards to athletic and sporting goods stores.

Jane Melin of the Licking Memorial Hospital Pharmacy received an honorable mention award in the Care for the Underserved Award category. In 30 years at LMH, Melin has helped to shape the pharmacy's prescription policies, expanded the Employee Prescription Program, educated physicians about affordable prescription alternatives, matched indigent patients with free or reduced-cost prescriptions, counseled patients on insulin therapy and more.
