The Ohio Plein Air Society's annual competition will be held in Licking County again during the first weekend in October.
The contest will kick off with a pre-competition event in Granville, "Granville: Portraits En Plein Aire," on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 1 and 2. Artists will paint homes, businesses and historic sites in and around Granville. All paintings will be for sale. A public reception during which the works will be exhibited will be held at the Robbins Hunter Museum, 221 E. Broadway, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. Light refreshments will be served.
Local residents and businesses can sign up with OPAS artists to have their homes and businesses painted. Artists will be outside the farmers market Aug. 16 and 23 and Sept. 13 and 27.
For more information, call Doreen St. John, event chairperson, at 330-904-4162 or email Doreen.email@example.com.
The plein-air competition begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, and continues through 3 pm. Sunday, Oct. 5. Artists will paint on location throughout Licking County, with Sunbear Studio & Gallery in Alexandria serving as the hub for most events. The society is collaborating with Meredith Martin, artist and owner of Sunbear Studio.
On Sunday, artists will enter one work in a juried show. Ken Emerick, director of the Ohio Arts Council's Individual Artists and Percent for Arts Programs, will judge the paintings. Also, a "QuickPaint" contest will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with artists completing a painting in two hours. The awards ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in front of Sunbear Studio and Gallery, 3 W. Main St., Alexandria.
The public may view the paintings created during the five-day event in a "wet paint show and sale" at Sunbear Studio from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. Winning paintings from the show and other selected works will be displayed at Sunbear Studio for a month after the show.
