Senior Clayton Bullard of the Johnstown-Monroe High School wrestling team remained unbeaten while winning a Division II sectional title at 195 pounds Feb. 15 at Madison Plains.
The senior was the lone competitor for the Johnnies to advance to district Feb. 21 and 22 at Uhrichsville Claymont. At district, the top four finishers in each weight class advanced to state Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 1, at Ohio State.
Bullard entered district at 44-0 overall after going 2-0 at sectional with two pins.
The top four finishers in each weight class at sectional qualified for district.
Hayden Bullard (132) placed fifth and was a district alternate. Trevor McGee (138) and Vince Walls (126) both were sixth.
Aaron Davis (220), Colton Hiles (152) and Seth Jackson (145) also competed at sectional as the Johnnies finished 10th (51.5) of 13 teams behind champion Amanda-Clearcreek (228).
Last season in the Division III state tournament, Clayton Bullard finished sixth at 195.
Boys basketball team loses to Academy
The boys basketball team finished the regular season 18-4, losing to Columbus Academy 46-43 on Feb. 18.
Will Orr scored 18 points with four 3-pointers, Jason Carter had 15 points and Justin Bush added seven.
Johnstown is seeded fourth in the Division II district tournament and had a first-round bye.
The Johnnies open the postseason Tuesday, Feb. 25, at home against 11th-seeded Caledonia River Valley or 17th-seeded Mifflin. River Valley was 17-4 and Mifflin was 11-10 before the teams played Feb. 21.
The second-round winner advances to play sixth-seeded Bloom-Carroll, ninth-seeded Columbus East, 23rd-seeded Beechcroft or 24th-seeded Heath in a district semifinal March 5 at Olentangy.
