Junior Olivia McGee is expected to be among the top returnees for the Johnnies girls track and field team.

Josiah Annis set the program record in the pole vault, and he hopes to do even more next spring for the Johnstown-Monroe High School boys track and field team.

The sophomore reached the Division II regional meet May 29 and 31 at Lexington, where he cleared 13 feet to place eighth as the top four in each event advanced to state June 6 and 7 at Ohio State. Wyatt Tilton of Bellville Clear Fork was fourth in the pole vault with a 14-3.

In the district 2 meet that concluded May 24 at Heath, Annis went 14-0 to finish second and break the program record of 13-6 that he shared with senior Alex Workman.

Annis plans to continue to work on his technique in the offseason.

"Technique is huge because every little bit of it helps," he said. "You really have to work on it. You have to work on the technique of running with the pole, your technique in the air ... there are so many little things you have to do over and over."

The boys team finished 46th (1 point) at regional behind champion Pemberville Eastwood (61) as 46 teams scored. The girls team did not score at regional as Orrville (63) won with 42 teams scoring.

The girls 3,200-meter relay of senior McCalah Mast, freshman Erica Cox, senior Taylor Thomas and sophomore Grace Mast was disqualified at regional. The same four finished second in a season-best 10 minutes, 10.36 seconds to advance from the district meet at Heath.

At district, the boys team finished 11th (15) behind champion Caledonia River Valley (130) as 14 teams scored and the girls finished 17th (15) behind champion Heath (70) as 21 teams scored.

In the 10-team LCL meet that concluded May 17, the girls team finished seventh (23.25) behind champion and host Watkins Memorial (180) and the boys team was 10th (7) behind champion Watkins Memorial (189).

Seniors for the boys team were Nathaneal Ashbrook, Charles Benton, Thomas Benton, Perry Hatcher and Workman. The senior girls were Tanner Jakeway, McCalah Mast and Thomas.

Expected back for the girls team are juniors Elizabeth Blenk, Alexis Hercenberg, Olivia McGee and Kassie Thomas, sophomores Anna Benton, Becca Kozel, Abi LaRoche, Grace Mast, Alaina Morrison, Noel Offenburger, Lauren Thomas and Kylee Villwock and freshmen Erica Cox, Laura Cox and Abby Holderby.

Juniors Matt Hollis, Tommy McCullough, Marcus Nogaj, Cody Thompson and Matt Walton, sophomores Annis and Marcus Funderwhite and freshmen Josh Ashbrook, Josh Bentley, David Dennis, Paul Lang, Jeff Nogaj, Brenden Peloquin, Lane Sidner and Mason Work are expected back for the boys.

The team was led by first-year coach John Peters.

The girls volleyball program still is looking for a coach, according to athletics director Mike Carter.

"We would like to get this taken care of as soon as possible," Carter said. "We would like someone in time for summer workouts."
