Licking County children who are staying at home during spring break could check out hands-on art and science activities at The Works in downtown Newark.

Ben Clemons, events and volunteer coordinator, said youth would have an opportunity to explore various labs at The Works and most activities will involve take-home projects.

"We plan to have a busy week," he said. "We'll have activities for all age groups."

On Tuesday, March 30, the spring-break program will be "Zap in a Snap," featuring the Look Lab on the first floor and its optical illusions.

"It will be an educational project based on a circuit board and the Zap Labs," Clemons said.

Traditionally, the biggest draw of the week at The Works is Wednesday's "Spring Break Nationals I" and Friday's "Spring Break Nationals II," with representatives of National Trail Raceway.

Jim Layton, general manager of National Trail, is expected to be on hand during the day.

"There will be a time to build and test cars, have practice runs and race cars for each age group," Clemons said. "There will be prizes for the fastest car. It's a popular activity. The Nationals usually bring the biggest crowd."

On Thursday, youngsters could check out "Don't Be Fooled by Art" in The Works' Look Lab.

"We'll have activities with optical illusions," Clemons said. "There are student artists that helped put our Look Lab together. It's a permanent lab on the first floor."

All of next week's programs offer students an opportunity to participate in interactive art and science activities, said Rori Preston, Works Museum education director.

"It's all about having fun and learning at the same time," Preston said.

No registration is required. Admission to the activities and the entire museum is $7 for adults, $3 for children, $5 for seniors and free for members of The Works.

Spring-break activities will be ongoing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Works is a family destination and educational facility at 55 S. First St. in Newark. The museum, gallery and gift shop are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, call (740) 349-9277 or visit the Web site at www.attheworks.org.
