Licking County will gain another farmers market in the summer with the launch of a Wednesday market at Utica's Velvet Ice Cream.

"We wanted to do it for the community of Utica," said Andre Dager, Velvet vice president of guest relations. "Everyone around us has a market right now. We're a local product, and with everything being grown locally (for the market), we thought it would be a good fit."

All vendors must live within 30 miles of Utica, and all products sold at the market must be raised by the vendor. The market will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning June 16 and continuing through Sept. 22. Twenty-five booth spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a booth fee of $10 per day.

A discount will be given to vendors who sign up for the entire season.

"We hope to have 20 to 25 vendors," Dager said. "We already have five or six. The market will be right in our front lawn in the grass area. I think it will be a great fit for us. The kids can play and feed ducks, and the market will help make it a great experience."

Velvet Ice Cream is headquartered on 25 acres at Ye Olde Mill in Utica. Those interested in participating in the market should call Dager at (740) 892-3921, ext. 223, or 1-800-589-5000.

In addition to Velvet's market, Johnstown will bring back a farmers market in the town square for its second season.

"We'll try to do some different things this year," said Pat Kramer, market coordinator. "Downtown Johnstown is working with me. The market is trying to get people back downtown. A couple of organic growers have contacted me about coming in as new vendors."

Johnstown's market will begin Saturday, June 19, and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. An additional Wednesday market will begin July 17 and continue on Wednesdays through mid-September from 4 to 7 p.m.

Cost is $5 per spot. Reserved spots are available to all-season vendors only. Cost for all-season vendors is $125 for all Saturdays and Wednesdays, $85 for all Saturdays and $45 for all Wednesdays.

An all-day market is scheduled for July 10 during the Fireman's Festival, and the square will be a stop July 17 for the Licking County Land of Legend Bike Trail Association.

"Downtown Johnstown is working with me to promote the market and have special things going on different Saturdays," Kramer said. "If anyone in the community has ideas, we're open. I always hold space open at the front of the square for civic associations."

Any vendor wanting to reserve spots should call Kramer at (740) 967-8388 or e-mail K2ramer@embarqmail.com.
