In a first-grader's backpack for Pataskala Elementary School this year they should have: two three-ring binders, two boxes of crayons, disinfectant cleaning wipes, two glue sticks, two dozen pencils, a plastic supply box, three-prong plastic folders, a 12-inch ruler, a pair of scissors, a large box of tissues, a backpack, a highlighter and a roll of paper towels.

Whew, that's a lot and during a time when money is tight for a number of families.

We have all been beneficiaries of someone's generosity during our lives and the Y Christian Emphasis Committee is a volunteer group aimed at mobilizing the members of the Y and the community to give back and provide support for our neighbors. Its first activity as a committee was amazing and truly spoke to the generosity and love this community has for its own.

The Y Christian Emphasis Committee started a school supply drive on July with the hope of being able to send 24 backpacks full of needed supplies to LEADS. The Y Christian Emphasis Committee as well as additional volunteers gathered at the YMCA Western Branch and had a "Packing Party/Ice Cream Social."

School supplies were sorted, lists were handed out and ice cream was enjoyed. When the dust settled, we were overjoyed to discover that we had exceeded our goal with 26 backpacks full of supplies for grades 1-5, in addition to a number of boxes full of extra supplies.

I want to thank everyone who contributed time, supplies and money. I would also like to thank Walmart, Sam's Club, Meijer and Target for donating gift cards to help us purchase the extra supplies needed to complete the backpacks. Thank you to LEADS for picking up all the supplies and also for distributing them to those who have need.

LEADS is at 12536 Adams Lane SW Pataskala 43062 (740) 927-9861.

The YMCA Western Branch is at 355 W. Broad St., Pataskala 43062 (740) 964-6522; please contact us for more information on the Y Christian Emphasis Committee.
