Two area residents recently completed basic training.

Army Pfc. Alex S. Brandt graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla., and Army National Guard Pvt. Matt Hummel graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. Brandt is the son of Burnadett Brandt of Pataskala and Hummel is the son of Philip and Tina Hummel of Newark.

During the nine-week program, the soldiers received training in drill and ceremonies; weapons; map reading; tactics; military courtesy; military justice; physical fitness; first aid; and Army history, core values and traditions.

Hummel received additional training in development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and varoius weapons and weapons defenses.

Brandt is a graduate of Watkins Memorial High School and Hummel is a graduate of Licking Valley High School.
