Full Armor of God Baptist Church, 14454 E. Broad St. in Pataskala, will present a live nativity from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.

This free event is open to the public, and will include hot chocolate, cookies and caroling.


Volunteers needed for
VITA program

The Licking County Coalition for Housing is seeking volunteers to help local taxpayers prepare and e-file their income tax returns.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the Newark Public Library, 101 W. Main St. Information, dinner and training materials will be provided. The tax-preparation site will be open from late-January to mid-April at the LCCH offices in downtown Newark, with additional hours at Opportunity Links on East Main Street and Warner Library on The Ohio State University-Newark campus.

Volunteers are provided with training materials and must pass the IRS certification test. They may attend local training classes, or train and certify online through the IRS website. A commitment of approximately 10 hours for training and four hours per week during tax season is required.

Kiwanis to host
'Holiday Hoops'

The Granville Kiwanis Club will host its first "Holiday Hoops Tournament" Dec. 29-30 at Granville High School, 248 New Burg St.

Four varsity high school boys teams (Granville, Coshocton, Columbus East and Covington Catholic ) will play two games each over two evenings. Coshocton will play Covington Catholic at 4 p.m. Dec. 29, and Granville will play Columbus East at 6 p.m. Dec. 29.

The losers of the first two games will play at 5 p.m. Dec. 30, and the championship game will be played at 7 p.m. Dec. 30.

Proceeds of the tournament will support the American Heart Association (in memory of Don Snelling, longtime supporter of Granville High School athletics); the Granville Recreation District Scholarship Fund; and the Granville Kiwanis Foundation.

The GHS Key Club will conduct a food drive in conjunction with the tournament.

Food items collected by the club will be distributed to the Licking County Food Pantry network.

Midland to present
Sandi Patty Dec. 8

Sandi Patty will perform at the Midland Theatre in Newark at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The winner of 39 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards and four Billboard Music Awards headlined her first national tour in 1984. Patty was nationally acclaimed after her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was included in the ABC Statue of Liberty rededication broadcast on July 4, 1986. This led to appearances on The Tonight Show, Christmas in Washington and Walt Disney's Fourth of July Extravaganza.

She sang the national anthem at the Indianapolis 500 in 1987-88 and from 1990-92.

Midland to present
'Gift of the Magi'

The historic Midland Theatre in downtown Newark will present a performance of O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi" at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.

The story is about a young couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money.

Tickets range from $6 to $14, plus $3 for handling and historic preservation fees.
