40th Firecracker Five kicks off July 4

The Rotary Club of Granville has announced that registration is under way for the 40th annual Firecracker Five race, set for Thursday, July 4.

Participants can choose between the five-mile race or the 3.1-mile (5 kilometer) walk.

The wheelchair division will start at 7:40 a.m. Runners and walkers will start at 7:45 a.m.

The fee for those who register in advance is $32 and includes a hi-tech shirt. Advance registration closes June 26. Race day registration also is available.

Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. behind Granville High School, 248 New Burg St. Dressing and shower facilities are available at the high school. Participants must provide their own towel and lock. Runners 12 years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult on the course. The race will be held rain or shine.

Awards will be given to the first five male and female overall finishers and to the first three finishers in each age group. The first three wheelchair finishers also will receive awards. No awards will be given to walkers.

The Firecracker Five, started in 1974 under the direction of Ted Barclay, a Rotarian and then the Denison University athletic director, is held in conjunction with the Granville Kiwanis Fourth of July Street Fair, which runs from July 4 through July 7. In addition to entertainment, food, games and rides, the Mile Long Parade begins at 10:45 a.m.

Proceeds from the Firecracker Five help support the Granville Rotary's scholarship and exchange student programs, a variety of local projects and disaster relief worldwide.
