Licking County Treasurer Scott Ryan last week announced his candidacy for next year's Ohio 71st House District's race.
Ryan, a Republican, was elected treasurer in November.
"I was approached by some community members with respect to the office, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea about the opportunity to have a platform where I could do more good for the community," Ryan said.
Current 71st District Rep. Jay Hottinger is serving his third term, which expires in December 2014. He is ineligible to run for the seat again, according to his website.
Ryan, 48, said he thought the timing was right to announce his candidacy and it gives him an opportunity to finalize some ideas he has about improving communication between government officials and citizens.
Ryan will have to run in the May 2014 primary election against any other Republicans vying for the seat.
If chosen in the primary, he will run in the November 2014 general election.
Ryan graduated from Granville High School and from Miami University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He said he owned a business in Licking County for 25 years before running for public office.
