Beekman, Compton to challenge Butcher for mayor
Three candidates are running for mayor of Pataskala, including incumbent Steve Butcher, who is finishing his second term.
Terry Beekman and Pataskala City Councilman Mike Compton also have filed petitions to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Beekman ran for mayor against Butcher in 2009.
Compton said in July he would join the race after fellow City Councilman Mike Fox said he intended to run. Fox decided not to run and said he would support Compton.
Butcher said he'd like to continue the work that has been started in the city during his tenure.
He was elected in 2005 and 2009.
Prior to serving as mayor, Butcher was appointed in 2001 to serve the remainder of a City Council term and served on Pataskala's economic-development committee.
He and his wife, Nancy, own the Nutcracker Family Restaurant on Broad Street.
Compton said he joined the race after talking with constituents. He said he thinks the timing is right to try a bid for mayor.
He owns Classic Landscape and writes for the Ohio Outdoor News. He also helps organize the annual Pataskala Antique Power Show.
Beekman could not be reached for comment.
The mayor's race is nonpartisan, according to the city charter.
The filing deadline for write-in candidates is Aug. 26, according to the Licking County Board of Elections.
