Benjamin King, Pataskala's service director, turned in his resignation last week.
His last day will be Feb. 28.
King said he accepted a position as director of operations for Violet Township. He said he will begin his new job March 3.
"I am pretty excited about the opportunity," King said.
"You hate to lose somebody with that much experience and expertise in the city," Mayor Mike Compton said. "He's been around and is known by the residents, and he knows the roads."
Compton said King has been with the city for six and a half years and filled in for the administrator several times.
He served as acting administrator for several weeks at the beginning of this year until the city appointed utilities director Nathan Coey as acting administrator Jan. 21.
Compton said the city will begin searching for King's replacement and possibly could choose an interim candidate until a full-time director can be hired.
King earned $74,463 annually and the city paid $25,816 in benefits for him, according to James Nicholson, Pataskala's finance director.
