Baseball squad needs help in MSL title chase

The Licking Heights High School baseball team's bid for a third consecutive MSL-Cardinal Division championship was hurt with consecutive losses to league-leaders Fisher Catholic and Liberty Union.

The Hornets lost to Fisher Catholic 9-6 on April 25 and fell to Liberty Union 7-0 on April 26.

Before May 3, Licking Heights was 7-3 in the league and Fisher Catholic and Liberty Union were 9-2.

Licking Heights plays host to Fisher Catholic on Monday, May 6.

"Obviously we have to win out and the big game will be against Fisher Catholic," coach Jeff Boyer said. "We didn't play well at all the first time against them when they beat us 9-6. We scored five of our runs in the last inning.

"We were never in the game and just didn't seem ready to play. We're looking forward to the rematch."

The same day, Liberty Union will play West Jefferson twice. The first game will be resumed with a tie score in the 11th.

"If West Jeff can pull out at least one win there and we take care of our business, we'll have a chance," Boyer said. "We were given a second chance when Berne Union upset Liberty Union (1-0 on April 29). Now we've got to make the most of it."

The Division II district tournament draw is Sunday, May 5.

Junior Luke Langkamp pitched a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Millersport on April 30. Second baseman Ronnie Dawson hit a two-run home run for the Hornets, who scored in every inning except the third.

The Hornets then beat host Berne Union 3-1 on May 1, as junior Jake Brandwein scattered five hits and first baseman Jacob Kayser hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

"We're at the point of no return in the league and if we want to reach our goal of winning the championship in our final year in the MSL, we can't have another misstep," Boyer said. "It's almost like the district tournament is starting a week or two ahead of time, where if you lose, it's done and over. We really want to win our third championship in a row."

Softball team slips out of league race

The softball team's bid to win an MSL-Cardinal championship fell short with two recent losses.

The Hornets lost to West Jefferson 6-3 on April 23 and to Liberty Union 13-3 on April 26.

"Liberty Union just has our number and we struggle every time we play them," coach Bo Ramsey said. "We still have other goals, like winning 20 games and making a district tournament run. We've just got to shore up some things and play with more confidence."

Entering play May 3, the Hornets were 7-3 in the league. Liberty Union was 12-0 and West Jefferson was 10-1.

The Division II district tournament draw is Sunday, May 5.

The Hornets were 1-13 before playing Westerville South in the regular-season finale May 3. The Division II regional draw is Monday, May 6, with the tournament scheduled to begin Friday, May 10.
