Union County Engineer Steve Stolte is currently advertising for bids to replace and install new guard rails throughout the county.

Stolte said guard rail work is needed for a variety of reasons.

"Some of them are old, some of them are not of modern type," he said. He said there also are areas in the county that need guard rails that do not have them.

Assistant Engineer Jeff Stauch said there are more than 40 locations throughout the county that need a total of three miles of guard rail.

The estimated budget for the project is $296,000 according to the county commissioners' office. Stauch said the project will be funded with federal grants.

Bids will be opened at 11 a.m. on July 14. Stauch said only three or four contractors in Ohio specialize in guard rail work. He expects at least two to bid.

Stauch said work likely will start in September or October, but could happen as early as August. The whole project will take about four weeks to complete, he said.

Stauch said through traffic will be maintained during the work.
