Associates at Honda of America Mfg., along with the company match, raised $1.68-million for the 2009 United Way campaigns.

The funds will be distributed to 63 of Ohio's 88 counties in the coming year.

This marks the 14th year that the total campaign dollars raised through associate pledges and the company match exceeded $1-million.

Honda of America matches associate contributions at 50 cents per dollar.

More than 7,400 Honda associates pledged contributions to the 2009 campaign, with the majority of the money directed to agencies in their own communities, said Tom Shoupe, Honda of America's 2009 United Way campaign chair.

"I am proud of our associates who are supporting these United Way agencies, and through them are making a difference in our communities," Shoupe said. "Many of these same associates are also volunteering their talents, experience and time to making our communities better places in which to live and work."

United Way campaigns support hundreds of local agencies that provide educational and enrichment programs for youth, programs on family health and well-being, and care for people in crisis, said Bobbie Jo Trittschuh, Honda's United Way project leader. "They include well known organizations such as the American Red Cross and YMCA, as well as agencies unique to our local communities," she said.

Since 1982, associates and Honda of America have contributed $28.2-million to local agencies through the United Way. Honda of America operates four plants, along with manufacturing support operations in Union, Logan and Shelby counties.
