Several county agencies are organizing Union County's first Safe & Sound Expo, to take place later this year.

A planning group held its first meeting last week to begin gearing up for the August event, which will be organized by the Union County Sheriff's Office and the Union County Emergency Services Association.

The purpose of the event, according to Union County Chamber of Commerce public relations and tourism director Christy Clark, is to offer safety seminars and presentations, demonstrations, training sessions and resources for local youth, adults, seniors and members of the agriculture community.

"The overall objective is to promote a safe environment in our community by connecting our residents with local public safety service agencies and organizations," Clark said.

Seminars and presentations will focus on baby-sitting safety, dangers of social networking, Internet safety for adults and youth, senior safety solutions for the home, agriculture safety, drug awareness and other topics.

"Preparation and planning is the key to surviving natural disasters, accidents and injuries," said Allen Township fire chief Rod Goddard.

The countywide event is slated to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Bunsold Middle School, 14198 state Route 4, Marysville. The event is free and food will be available.
