About a quarter of a million chickens were killed or euthanized following a fire last week at the Ohio Fresh Eggs chicken farm in Mount Victory.

The fire took place March 23, starting in one of the farm's warehouses. The blaze required the efforts of more than 100 firefighters from 35 departments to put out. No one was injured during the incident.

About $2.5-million in damages was caused by the fire. Responders were forced to cut power lines to the farm, and this resulted in deteriorating conditions in two of the farm's chicken barns. About 250,000 chickens had to be euthanized after the fire.

Representatives of the Ohio state fire marshal's office completed an investigation into the incident on March 25, and were unable to identify a cause for the fire, stating that electrical problems might have been involved. Employees returned to work at the farm in its undamaged barns on March 25.
