The Union County YMCA will be in full bloom next month, when Marysville becomes the new home of the Greater Columbus Dahlia Society Show.

The annual flower show will celebrate its 45th year at the Union County YMCA-Ohio National Guard Armory facility in Marysville on Sept. 3 and 4, according to Marysville Uptown Renewal Team manager Gretchen Friend.

Marysville resident Dick Westfall, who has chaired the dahlia show competition for many years, said Union County's strong agricultural heritage makes for the perfect setting for the show's new home.

"The goal of the event is to create excitement about growing dahlias in central Ohio," Westfall said. "Previously we held our show at the Eastland Mall in Columbus, but due to circumstances, we chose to change the venue. I thought Marysville and Union County would be a great place to bring our event. With the rich agricultural backdrop, Marysville is perfect for interested people to take part."

Hundreds of dahlias are expected to be on display as part of the show, Friend said. A tuberous perennial with strong, show petals, dahlias originally came from Mexico and Central America, but are now grown throughout the United States, she added.

"The armory will be ablaze with beautiful colors and flower shapes," Friend said. "If you have never seen these beauties up close, this is a perfect place to come and see just how lovely these flowers are."

Westfall said the entire community is invited to attend the dahlia show.

"My hope is that the community of Marysville and Union County comes out to see these beautiful flowers," Westfall said. "We want the community to enjoy an afternoon viewing these lovely works of nature's art. The society members are always happy to answer questions about how to grow dahlias, if you have an interest in getting started."

The Greater Columbus Dahlia Society Show is set from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Union County YMCA-Ohio National Guard Armory facility, 1150 Charles Lane. The event is free and open to the public. More information on the society can be found by calling Westfall at 937-642-9142, or the Union County Chamber of Commerce at 937-642-6279.
