Organizers are looking for a few more Union County teams to join the ranks of those participating in the American Cancer Society's national cancer research fundraiser.

ACS volunteers will host an informational meeting next week to share details about this year's Relay For Life in Marysville, according to Angela Gamble. Volunteers are encouraging Union County residents to organize their teams early in the year, said Christine Mills, regional income development director for the ACS.

"By organizing early, teams have more time to have fundraisers and team members have more time to raise funds for the American Cancer Society," Mills said.

This year's Marysville Relay For Life will take place May 20-21 at the Marysville High School stadium. During the 24-hour period, teams of eight to 15 people will set up campsites in the stadium and participate in games and ceremonies to raise money for cancer research. Teams raise money by securing sponsorships from county residents, selling luminaria to be used in the ceremony, and by having at least one team member walking on the stadium track at all times.

"The event raises awareness about the progress against cancer while also raising funds to fight the disease," said Christina Gruenbaum, co-chair of the relay planning committee. "Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting community event as a volunteer or a participant have made a commitment to fight back against cancer."

The informational meeting for captains and volunteers participating in Marysville's Relay For Life is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Union Rural Electric (URE) Cooperative, 15461 Route 36, Marysville. Anyone interested in this year's Relay For Life is invited to attend.
