Dublin Irish Festival

5K run Aug. 1 helps kick off Festival weekend

By

About 1,000 runners will kick off the Dublin Irish Festival with an Aug. 1 5K.

The IGS Energy/Dublin Irish Festival 5K will mark the beginning of the multi-day festival celebrating all things Irish in Coffman Park Aug. 2-4.

The running tradition that starts the DIF at 7 p.m. the Thursday before the festival officially opens lets runners don some green, get a little exercise and spend an evening in Historic Dublin.

"It's a nice kickoff to the weekend," said Sara O'Malley, Dublin events assistant.

The race usually draws 800 to 900 runners, and 1,090 showed up last year, O'Malley said.

The event shuts down Historic Dublin streets, something that doesn't occur very often.

"We really cut back on shutting down High Street in Historic Dublin," Events Manager Alison LeRoy said.

The Kids Dash will return to the event for the second year.

"Last year we had about 60 kids," said Trish Lackey, events administrator for Dublin.

"We already have about 100 registered this year."

The Kids Dash takes young runners a quarter of a mile through Historic Dublin at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 1.

"(Columbus Blue Jackets mascot) Stinger comes out and does calisthenics with the kids," Lackey said.

At the run, children can also make signs to support 5K runners in a craft tent.

"It's a fun event because kids in the dash or not in the dash can color a sign for their mom or dad running in the race," O'Malley said.

DIF Honorary Chairman Frank Slavic and pipers will kick off the 5K. The DubCrawl will follow it.

"Businesses are open and there's music playing," O'Malley said.

From 5 p.m. to midnight, the DubCrawl will run with specials and live music.

Vinegar Hill is slated to play from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at Ha'penny Bridge Imports of Ireland; Capital City Pipes & Drums will perform at the 5K start and finish line from 6:30 to 7 p.m.; and the Dublin Cornet Band will play in the BriHi Square Plaza from 6:45 to 9 p.m.

Also slated to perform are The Kells from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. in the Frog Park and Brigid's Cross from 8 to 11 p.m. at Brazenhead.

Registration for the DIF 5K for adults is $30 before July 27 and $35 after. Registration for runners 18 and younger is $25.

The Kids Dash for ages 12 and younger is $5.

Packets can be picked up before the Aug. 1 race at Columbus Running Co. locations or onsite beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind 27 N. High Street.
