I am writing in support of the upcoming operating levy on the November ballot for the New Albany-Plain Local School District. Of the total request -- 24.4 mills -- 20.53 mills already is being paid by all of us while the remainder 3.87 mills are new.

This levy is significant to the district in that it would fund about 50 percent of the district's operating budget, which includes teacher and staff salaries and benefits, utilities and other costs.

Most importantly, residents should be happy to know this levy will be in the form of a permanent property tax, rather than the "emergency levy" format that has existed for several years. Assuming voters pass this levy in November, the district would need to come back to voters in the future only for incremental millage increases for its operating funds.

My family and I moved to New Albany for many reasons, but one of the main reasons was the quality of the school district that would educate our children (and the benefits that come with such a high-quality school system).

I strongly encourage my fellow residents to support this levy, not only vocally in conversation with friends and neighbors but also by having as many registered voters show up at the polls in November. Your vote for the levy will help the district continue the excellence it has provided our children thus far.
