New Albany residents competed for the Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio in the Holiday Invitational Dec. 19-21. Top finishers were:

Boys: 8-and-under -- Josh Wiedemann (third 50 back); 13-and-older -- Erikk Paakanen (second 100 breast, third 200 breast)

Girls: 8-and-under --Lydia Cornelius (first 200 free, first 25 fly, second 25 back, third 50 free).

Veteran fast-pitch umpire Jim Wharton and a staff of instructors will conduct an OHSAA-approve softball umpire class. The class starts Feb. 4 and runs eight consecutive Wednesdays at Westerville South. Upon completion of course studies and passing a two-part test on the final day, students will attain an OHSAA license for high school fast-pitch softball and then can pay a fee to secure an ASA umpiring license.
