New Albany-Plain Local school board members have asked members of the community financial advisory committee to meet with the board's during its May 7 work session.

Board member Mike Klein said board president Diane Goedeking sent an e-mail to the five committee members, asking them to meet to discuss their concerns.

Derek Benseler, the committee's appointed spokesman, said he has not had an opportunity to reply.

"I just got back in from out of town, and I have not had a chance to talk to my committee about it yet," he said.

The committee members had asked the board for an opportunity to voice their concerns about the purpose of their committee after the group met for the first time Feb. 23.

The financial advisory committee, which many are calling the financial subcommittee, asked the board to consider having the group answer to the school board instead of to Superintendent Steve Castle. In addition, the group would like to meet monthly rather than quarterly, make monthly reports to the board and review the district's financial decisions prior to the board hearing them.

During the board's April 13 work session, Goedeking asked committee member Debbie Klug to contact the rest of the financial advisory committee members to set up a meeting for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 18.

Committee members responded by asking that the board contact the committee directly and professionally, rather than through another member during a board meeting.

Klein said he thought it was unfortunate that the committee has not been able to meet monthly since February, saying that was one of the group's concerns.

"We really do want to work with the committee," Klein said.
