School districts wishing to waive the requirement to offer all-day kindergarten next year can start the application process with the state in November.

School districts wishing to waive the requirement to offer all-day kindergarten next year can start the application process with the state in November.

Jane Wiechel, an associate superintendent with the Ohio Department of Education who spoke to New Albany residents at a forum hosted by New Albany for Kids on Wednesday, Oct. 28, said the ODE is getting ready to release the Web-based application.

She said the department hopes to have all applications from school districts by the end of January, so districts hoping for a waiver will know by February.

Wiechel said district officials would have to prove they have a plan to implement all-day kindergarten to receive the waiver.

Only about a third of Ohio school districts do not already offer all-day kindergarten.
