Calland, 18, is one of 560 semifinalists — and one of 16 Ohio students —selected from more than 3,000 candidates on the basis of their achievements on the SAT and ACT, leadership qualities, character and community and school involvement.

One male and one female student from each state, as well as 20 students representing visual, literary and performing arts and 15 students at large, will be selected as U.S. Presidential Scholars in May.

The winners will travel to Washington, D.C. in June for recognition.

The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 and has honored more than 5,000 students since then.
