The New Albany Police Department is mourning canine officer Bungee, who was killed in an accident May 25.

According to the department, the door on officer Joel Strahler's car malfunctioned May 25 and Bungee leapt out of the car into the path of oncoming traffic on U.S. Route 62. Sgt. Greg Jones said police dogs are trained to leave a vehicle immediately when the door opens.

Officials said it was unclear at this point if Bungee, a Belgian Malinois, will be replaced. He was purchased with grant money in August.

Bungee was trained as a patrol dog, to track lost people and to sniff out narcotics.
