Plain Township trustees agreed Sept. 21 to hire six part-time firefighters.

Fire Chief John Hoovler said the township would use three of the new employees as part of its regular scheduling. The other three will fill in for full-time firefighters when they request time off.

Hoovler said the addition of the six firefighters will bring the departmentís total to 24. He said the department lost several part-timers recently when they were hired for full-time work by other local fire departments.

The new firefighters are Bryan Cantrell, Brendan Kambeitz, Nicholas Yutzy, Joe Zarbaugh, James Crum and David Haynes.

Hoovler said they will have different start dates. The ones with their paramedic certificates will begin at $12.34 an hour and the ones with emergency-medical technician status will start at $11.50 an hour.

All six will earn $1 more per hour after working for the department for six months.
