Plain Township trustees will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, to interview five candidates for the three lieutenant positions expected to open in the fire department.
The department tested 10 candidates for the position.
The trustees will interview the five with the top scores: Fred Houseberg, Jason Moore, Todd Moore, Chris Pabst and Brian Reasoner.
The lieutenant positions will open later this month when the trustees promote fire captains Joe Brown, Greg Ecleberry and Kevin Sponaugle to battalion chief. The department's three lieutenants, Travis Dudley, Jim Carney and Greg Myers, are in line to take their places.
The three battalion chief candidates will be interviewed by trustees during the Jan. 16 regular meeting. Battalion chiefs supervise emergency-response sites as the officers in charge and help ensure firefighters' safety, said Fire Chief John Hoovler. The township trustees authorized the new positions last April.
Hoovler said the department advertised the position externally but the three candidates who applied did not meet the qualifications, one of which was having served as a fire captain.
Trustees also are expected to interview the three captain candidates Jan. 16. Hoover previously said they are the only three members of the department qualified to be promoted to captain.
Hoovler said the department tested all 16 of its firefighters in the latest round of promotions and all of them passed the tests.
In business at the Jan. 2 meeting, the trustees:
* Voted unanimously to elect Dave Ferguson as chair and Dave Olmstead as vice chair.
* Appointed trustee Tom Rybski to be the liaison to the city of New Albany and Ferguson as liaison to the New Albany-Plain Local Schools.
Rybski suggested the liaison positions and volunteered to attend New Albany City Council meetings. Ferguson said he regularly attends school board meetings so he can report back to the township.
