Two New Albany High School juniors recently received awards for their artwork.
Sayoko Ariga was one of the top 10 students chosen out of 7,000 entries from the United States and Canada by the group CelebratingArt.com, said high school art teacher Juliette Montague.
Her self-portrait, which depicts an alligator eating a lot of food, will be published in a book produced by CelebratingArt. Ariga received $25 and will be given a book that includes her artwork.
Rebecca Brown finished in sixth place in the sixth annual Martin Luther King Jr. art competition, hosted by the city of Columbus' Community Relations Commission.
Brown's piece was designed to try to bring awareness to human rights issues.
The juried exhibition was open to artists in grades 6-12. Artworks were chosen to be exhibited at different locations throughout the city through the end of February.
