New Albany Symphony Orchestra

Feb. 9 concert will feature movie tunes

The New Albany Symphony Orchestra's Feb. 9 show, Let's Go to the Movies, will feature songs from popular films and a few guest performers.

"The music should be familiar to anyone who loves movies," said Linda Brill, marketing director for the symphony orchestra. "The audience will hear favorites from Harry Potter, The Sound of Music, Superman, Lord of the Rings, Schindler's List and many more."

The performance will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts, 100 E. Dublin-Granville Road in New Albany.

Three guest vocalists and a violinist will perform with the symphony orchestra.

Grace Wipfli of Toledo, a freshman studying vocal performance with an emphasis in musical theater and opera at Capital University's Conservatory of Music, was the winner of the organization's 2013 vocal music competition for ages 19 and younger, Brill said.

Wipfli is scheduled to perform I Have Confidence from The Sound of Music.

The other guest vocalists will be Jennifer Whitehead and Carolyn Redman.

Whitehead, a Westerville resident, is a soprano who recently graduated from Ohio State University with a doctorate in musical arts in voice and singing health. She teaches at Otterbein University and regularly performs with Opera Columbus.

Redman is a mezzo-soprano with a master's degree and doctorate in vocal performance from Ohio State University. She teaches at Kenyon College and has performed with Opera Columbus, the Opera Project Columbus and Columbus Light Opera.

The other guest artist for the evening will be Robert Firdman of Clintonville, a violinist who performs with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Firdman has been an adjunct violin teacher at Ohio Wesleyan University and Kenyon College and regularly performs with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.

Brill said Let's Go to the Movies will be two hours long and described the program as "very family friendly."

Tickets are $9 to $18 in advance or $11 to $20 the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased by calling CAPA at 614-469-0939, at or at the McCoy center box office one hour before the show.
