The New Albany-Plain Local school board cited leadership as a determining factor in awarding Superintendent April Domine a new five-year contract and a raise last week.
The board unanimously approved the deal April 28.
Domine was hired in December 2010 and her contract had been renewed annually.
"During our search three-and-a-half years ago, we spoke with over 40 different superintendents," said Mark Ryan, school board president. "Dr. Domine was the overwhelming right match for our district.
"Since then, through six biannual assessments in the superintendent's first term, we have affirmed her to be the exact, collaborative, visionary leader of exceptional quality that the district needs to achieve its goals."
Board member Natalie Matt said Domine's latest evaluation states, "Dr. Domine has demonstrated a unique command of the issues facing our district, a passion for our mission and vision and a concrete plan for constructive change."
The new contract increases Domine's salary from $155,000 to $175,000. She earns approximately $67,300 in benefits annually.
"Market conditions have altered over the last three years, with other local superintendents being paid proportionately higher salaries, including Dublin, Olentangy, Upper Arlington, Hamilton Local, and South-Western," which is why school board members decided to increase Domine's salary for the first time since she was hired, Matt said in an email.
Matt said the salary increase also recognizes Domine's completion this school year of her doctorate degree from Vanderbilt University.
Domine's contract retains a provision for performance compensation, allowing her to earn up to 15 percent of her annual salary based on the judgment of the board.
The board on Aug. 26, 2013, approved a 14-percent performance bonus of $21,700 permitted for Domine's work in the 2012-13 school year.
Ryan also said the extended term of the contract is important for the district.
"It is important to us to recognize excellent leadership, as it is a rare commodity in a competitive marketplace," Ryan said in an email. "Through our benchmarking, we also appreciate that this type of transformative leadership is best when leveraged for a significant period of time."
The contract will expire July 31, 2019.
