The members of the New Albany High School wrestling team are glad to have one of the longest weekends of the season behind them.

In addition to competing in nearly a half-dozen matches during the New Albany Invitational on Jan. 22, they also worked at the junior varsity tournament the night before and a youth tournament the following day that attracted more than 200 participants.

"We're definitely a little tired," junior Tommy Chamberlain said.

The Eagles finished third at their home event. Following individual wrestling in three pools, they lost 46-33 to Middleburg Heights Midpark in a semifinal dual before defeating Springfield Kenton Ridge 43-32 in the consolation final. Olmsted Falls defeated Midpark 52-17 in the championship.

"It's a very unique format where teams get individual matches and dual matches. Everybody says they love it," coach Marc Cofer said. "It was definitely a long weekend for all of us running three meets, though."

Chamberlain (140 pounds) and Matt Odierno (215) both placed second in Pool A. Other highlights in the top division included Drew Auld's third-place finish at 135. Nick Abraham (130) won his weight class in Pool B.

"He's doing real well," Cofer said of Chamberlain. "He's wrestling with a lot of confidence. He's having a good year."

Chamberlain won three of his five matches at the home meet, with both losses coming against Joe Quisenberry of Kenton Ridge. That pushed Chamberlain's season record to 19-5 after finishing 20-17 a year ago. He is undefeated in four OCC-Capital Division matches.

"I went to a lot of offseason tournaments (last) summer," Chamberlain said. "I wrestle one of our seniors, Drew Auld, in practice a lot, too. He really pushes me.

"I'm definitely more comfortable going out there this year. I'm working on my conditioning; that's always a big thing. I'm just working my moves and trying to get better."

Odierno and Nate Peck (130) also are undefeated in the league entering a dual at Olentangy Orange on Thursday, Jan. 27. The Eagles lost 58-12 a year ago but should be more competitive with a more experienced lineup.

"We've got to win the close matches," Cofer said. "That's the big thing in all these OCC duals."
