New Albany High School wrestler Matt Odierno will be doing another solo act at the Division I district tournament.

The senior was the only member of the Eagles' team to qualify for district for the second consecutive season after winning the title at 215 pounds in the sectional tournament Feb. 19 at Pickerington North. Junior Tommy Chamberlain and senior Alex Hake placed fifth at 145 and heavyweight, respectively, and will serve as district alternates.

The top four in each weight class at sectional advanced to the district tournament, which will be held Friday, Feb. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 26, at Hilliard Darby.

"We had a couple of other guys get close," Odierno said. "But I guess it's just me again now."

Odierno pinned his first three opponents at sectional and won the final when Pickerington Central's J.J. Chowoe forfeited because of an injury. Odierno, who was a state alternate last season, improved to 39-4.

"I was watching (Chowoe) in the semifinals and I think he tweaked a knee," Odierno said. "Another match would have been nice, but I'm just glad I'm moving on."

Chamberlain won all three of his matches in the consolation bracket. He defeated Newark's Dan Pastorius 7-0 in the fifth-place match to improve to 31-13.

Hake, a first-year wrestler who has benefited from sparring with Odierno, advanced to a championship semifinal before losing to Olentangy Liberty's Luke Fleming. After taking another loss in his first consolation match that knocked him out of contention for a district berth, Hake bounced back to defeat Newark's Robert Cole 11-5 in the fifth-place match to improve to 30-12.

Seniors Nate Peck (130) and Drew Auld (135) both placed sixth to finish with respective records of 23-15 and 27-17.

The Eagles, who were competing in Division I for the second year, totaled 59 points at sectional to place 10th behind champion Liberty (239.5).

Peck and Auld had been district qualifiers previously in Division II.

"It's just like last year; it's crazy," Odierno said. "It's definitely tougher at this level."

Odierno said he had fresher legs than he did toward the end of the regular season.

"My last loss was against a Lexington kid I'd beaten three times already," he said. "That was at St. Charles (duals on Feb. 8), and I ran something like four miles the night before. I felt a lot better out there (at sectional)."

Odierno will face Beavercreek's Nathan Bartell, who is 13-21, in the opening round at district.

The top four in each weight class at district advance to the state tournament, which will be held March 3-5 at Ohio State.

"I'm right where I think I need to be," Odierno said. "I'm ready for a long (postseason) run, hopefully all the way to state."
